How Much Should You Budget for a Tattoo in Bali?

Getting a tattoo in Bali can be a memorable way to mark a special trip, celebrate a personal milestone or bring a design you’ve been thinking about to life. Before making an appointment, however, it’s worth understanding how tattoo prices are calculated and what to prepare before visiting a studio.

At Sunset Ink Bali Canggu, we believe choosing a tattoo should feel exciting, not confusing. Our pricing is based on the individual design, its size and complexity, and the artist best suited to the work. Here’s what to know before planning your tattoo budget in Bali.

What Determines the Price of a Tattoo?

There isn’t one fixed price that applies to every tattoo. Two designs of similar dimensions can require very different amounts of work, depending on their details and the techniques involved.

At Sunset Ink, we consider three main factors when preparing a quote.

1. The Size and Placement of Your Design

Size is an important starting point when estimating tattoo costs. A small symbol on the wrist generally requires less work than an elaborate piece covering the forearm, thigh or back.

Placement also matters because certain areas can require more precision or a different approach during the tattooing process.

When requesting a quote, include your preferred body placement and an approximate measurement in centimetres. This helps our team understand the scale of your idea.

2. The Level of Detail and Tattoo Style

A clean, minimalist outline is different from a detailed portrait or a design with extensive shading. Fine-line illustrations, realistic imagery, Japanese compositions, intricate blackwork and colour tattoos each involve different techniques. The amount of detail, shading and colour work required can influence the final quote.

If you have a reference image, send it to us. Our artists can assess the design and advise whether any adjustments would help achieve the result you want.

3. The Artist Best Suited to Your Tattoo

Different tattoo styles require different skills and experience. Our team works across a range of styles, including fine line, realism, Japanese, colour and blackwork.

We consider the requirements of your design when preparing a personalised quote, helping you find an artist whose experience aligns with your vision.

Sunset Ink’s Minimum Tattoo Price

At Sunset Ink Canggu, our minimum price for a small tattoo is IDR 1,500,000.

This starting price applies to designs measuring 5 × 5 cm or smaller with minimal detail.

Planning more than one tiny tattoo? You may be able to get two or three small designs for the same IDR 1,500,000 minimum price, provided each design meets our size and detail guidelines.

This can be a practical option for friends getting matching tattoos or travellers who want several simple symbols during one visit.

Please share all the designs you have in mind so we can confirm whether they qualify for the same minimum price. For larger or more detailed work, we’ll assess your individual design before providing a quote.

Booking Your Tattoo: How Deposits Work

Once you’ve discussed your design and agreed on your booking, a deposit is required to secure your appointment.

Our booking deposit is 40% of the total booking fee, with a minimum deposit of IDR 500,000. This amount is deducted from the total cost of your tattoo.

Before confirming your appointment, please keep the following conditions in mind:

  • Deposits are non-refundable.
  • Within three months, your deposit may be transferred to a friend or family member.
  • At least 48 hours’ notice is required for rescheduling or transferring a deposit.
  • If you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment or fail to attend, your deposit may be retained.

We recommend reviewing these conditions before making your booking, especially if your Bali itinerary is still subject to change.

Payment Methods at Sunset Ink Canggu

We accept payment in Indonesian Rupiah cash, Visa and Mastercard.

If you prefer paying in cash, consider withdrawing the amount you need before arriving for your session. If you’re using a card issued overseas, check with your bank for any applicable foreign transaction or currency conversion fees.

Having your payment method ready makes it easier to focus on the experience and enjoy your appointment.

Is Aftercare Included in the Price?

Looking after a new tattoo is an important part of getting a good result. Your skin needs time to heal, and following the right aftercare routine helps protect your tattoo during this process.

Sunset Ink provides complimentary touch-ups within the first two months after your session, subject to our aftercare conditions.

To qualify, you must purchase our recommended aftercare products and follow the aftercare instructions provided by our team.

If you’re visiting Bali on holiday, remember to plan around your tattoo’s healing period. Swimming, direct sun exposure and other activities may need to be avoided while your tattoo heals.

Our team can explain the recommended aftercare routine before you leave the studio.

Booking ahead also gives us time to review your idea, discuss the design and match you with an appropriate artist.

To get started, prepare the following information:

  • A reference image or a description of your concept.
  • Your approximate tattoo size in centimetres.
  • Your preferred placement on the body.
  • Your preferred style and whether you want black and grey or colour.
  • Your intended appointment date or Bali travel dates.

The more information you provide, the easier it is for us to assess your request and give you a personalised quote.

How to Get a More Accurate Tattoo Quote

You don’t need to have every detail finalised before contacting a studio. Even a rough idea is a useful starting point.

For the most helpful estimate, send us a reference image and explain which parts of the design matter most to you. If you’re considering changes to an existing design, include those details too.

It’s also worth mentioning your budget and travel schedule early. This allows us to discuss suitable options and appointment availability before you commit.

Please remember that an initial estimate may need to be reviewed if the design, dimensions or level of detail changes.

What to Consider When Comparing Tattoo Studios in Bali

Tattoo prices can vary between studios, so it’s worth looking beyond the final number when deciding where to get your tattoo. A clear quote should help you understand what you’re paying for and whether the studio is the right fit for your design.

Before making your decision, consider these important points:

  • Pricing structure: Find out whether the studio charges per design, by the hour or by the session, and check the minimum price.
  • Design and size: Make sure the estimate reflects your intended dimensions, level of detail and preferred tattoo style.
  • Artist experience: Review the artist’s portfolio and look for examples that match the style you want, including healed tattoos where available.
  • Booking conditions: Understand the deposit amount, cancellation policy and options for rescheduling before confirming your appointment.
  • Aftercare support: Ask what aftercare guidance is provided, whether touch-ups are available and which conditions apply.
  • Payment details: Confirm the accepted payment methods and whether any additional charges apply.
  • Hygiene and safety: Choose a studio that follows appropriate hygiene practices, uses sterile single-use needles and explains how its equipment is handled.
  • Healing in Bali: Discuss sun exposure, swimming, sweating and other holiday activities with your artist so you can plan your tattoo around the healing period.

At Sunset Ink Bali Canggu, we recommend sharing your reference images, preferred size and placement before requesting a quote. This gives our team a clearer understanding of your design and helps us provide a more relevant estimate.

Ultimately, the best choice isn’t necessarily the cheapest tattoo. It’s a studio that offers clear pricing, suitable artistic experience, proper hygiene practices and aftercare guidance you can trust.
